John 5:6 “And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?”
I don’t know many people who really believe that its God’s will or their own will to be sick in practice though. How do I know? Watch and see if they go and visit the doctor or take medicine of any kind – or maybe visit Lourdes!
I mean, lets get graphic, if your son or daughter was involved in a car accident, you don’t ask the question: “is it God’s will that they bleed to death?” No, like the doctor, you will be doing everything in your power to save them. Do you think God cares any less? Surely that’s what Jesus demonstrated!
How many times have you heard that theological old chestnut, well I prayed and nothing happened. The person died so it must have been God’s will. Well, I’m glad that the Apostles or Jesus didn’t have that attitude (even Jesus didn’t get a perfect score). Do doctors or patients give up their faith in the efficacy of medicine or surgery because someone doesn’t make it? No, of course not – that would be stupid.
The fact is, if you don’t believe that God is willing or able to heal you or others today – guess what? You won’t get healed! But, if you sincerely believe that it’s not God’s will; then neither resist God’s will by going to the medical profession or popping pills- that’s hypocrisy.
If you start believing though for healing and believing for yourself and others, guess what? Over time you probably are going to see some results. I have and sometimes they are miraculous unexpected and instantaneous!
Let’s then, stop making excuses for God or his word – if we are not seeing the results that word promises then maybe we are not applying the word correctly! Maybe we are not doing what Jesus did? It’s so easy to believe that God doesn’t heal today – that neatly explains the zero results!
Long term sick
How do you answer those that are long term sick. We don’t want them feeling condemned. Of course we don’t, but neither do we want to believe for a watered down Gospel which has words but no power. My answer would be how Jesus approached it: “do you want to get well?”. Then, hit it with every weapon in your armoury, medicine, fasting, prayer, laying on of hands, oil and doctors. Sickness is bad; period.
