In Christ – a new creation
2 Cor 5:17 “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Gal 6:15 “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.”
Eph 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Identified with Christ’s death
This means, that God totally identifies us with Jesus in his death, burial and resurrection – as Romans 6 expounds:
Romans 6:5 “For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection”
Romans 6:11 “Even so consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, because we are ‘in Christ’, this means we are totally secure. We really are saved, from all future wrath and punishment of sins.
In Christ – no condemnation!
Romans 8:1 “[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,”
- Now – at this very moment as you are reading this.
- No – zero. Not even 0.00000001 %
- Condemnation (future punishment or penalty for your sins).
This is extremely good news, but it only applies to those who are ‘in Christ’.
If you are saved therefore, then there is absolutely NO chance of you ever being lost again. You can’t go back or backslide into the abyss because God has placed you in Christ the place of ultimate safety. Think about it, if God’s grace and salvation were powerful enough to save you in the first place, surely now you are in Christ, his grace and salvation abounds to an even greater extent!
In Christ – Noah and the ark
The story of Noah and the ark is a great illustration of the truth of the eternal security of the believer: God warns Noah of coming judgment. Noah and his family believe God and build the ark with three stories, which represent our complete salvation: body, soul and spirit.
1 Thess 5:23 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Epistle of Colossians expresses this truth of where God now locates the believer wonderfully:
Col 3:3″ For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God”
In Christ – the safest place!
Consequently, like Noah we are in the safest place in the Universe – hidden with Christ!
Incidentally, Noah’s name means ‘rest’ and that also indicates the peace and security we can now have in Christ. Note, as believers, we have rested from our works. Hebrews 4:10.
So, when Noah and his family entered the ark through the door then God then shut the door behind them. Now they couldn’t get out even if they wanted to!
Genesis 7:16 “And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.”
Likewise, if you are in Christ then you have entered the door of the ark ( Jesus) and are covered by his blood. Things can never go back to how they were because you died with Christ. You are in Christ Jesus; the door is closed! There is no more judgement for those in Christ Jesus! You can’t get out of this place of safety even if you want to!
What then, did Noah’s salvation depend on his performance? Did Noah and his sons steer the ship, unfurl the sails? No, because there weren’t any! Probably all they did was feed the animals and play dominos! On what did their salvation depend? It was simply being ‘in the ark’. Around them the world perished through the waters of judgement but Noah and his family ‘in the ark’ were saved.
1 Peter 4:20 “during the construction of the ark, in which a few that is eight persons, were brought safely through water and corresponding to that baptism now saves you – not the removal of the dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience throughout the resurrection of Jesus Christ”
Were they afraid? Did they fear that the ark might sink? Did they argue amongst themselves? Did they even maybe sin or doubt God’s salvation? Probably. However, none of that mattered, what mattered was being inside the ark. In other words their salvation depended on their location not on their feelings or even behaviour.
Preserved and kept in Christ
Jude 1:1 “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:”
Therefore, like Noah we are preserved from harm in Jesus Christ. It is God’s power that keeps us safe:
1 Peter 1:5 “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
It was the same with the Israelites: when they miraculously crossed the Red Sea there was no going back to Egypt. The passage through the sea was forever closed and they did’t see the Egyptians ever again. Just like Noah, they were saved from Egypt by water.
Let’s finish with the words of a benediction:
1 Peter 1:5 “Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
