Yesterday I reached the ripe old age of 50. I was reflecting on how many of us seasoned charismatics have been trundling along in our Christian lives: doing church, reading our Bibles, praying, witnessing, and maybe hoping one day for revival or possibly the rapture of the church – I would like both now!
Using a modern day analogy, it’s a bit like the Star Trek Enterprise on its impulse engines, getting there slowly on 0.5 warp!
What we need to use is the ship’s hyper-drive and I believe this is a fresh heart revelation of the excessive, unbelievable, over the top, hyper-grace that is really what the Gospel is about. This will transform and teach you more in 5 minutes than 5 years of most of the stuff many of us have been doing which to be quite frank is not working very well.
When I was 25 I was arrested by a Pentecostal who told me I was a theoretical Christian and needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit. (I didn’t even have a warp drive! I was using rocket fuel) He was right and the experience of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit transformed me to some degree.
However, in my 50th year I’m beginning to understand the Gospel afresh: I am a new creation, Christ is in me, I am righteous and holy in my spirit, I am a saint, I am indwelt by the Holy Spirit, I am a partaker of the divine nature, I am 100% forgiven, I can never be separated from the love of God, I am dead to the law and so on. This is what is motivating me to live for God to live Holy. True grace doesn’t lead to licentiousness it empowers us like nothing else!
